Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 1/2 cups (420g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups (300ml) warm water (105-115°F)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for greasing
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 4 dill pickles, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • Sesame seeds, for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in warm water. Let it stand for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.
  2. Combine Ingredients (Dough): Add the olive oil, salt, and half of the flour to the yeast mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms. Gradually add the remaining flour, mixing until the dough comes together. Add more flour if needed.
  3. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Lightly grease a large bowl with olive oil. Place the dough in the bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Combine Ingredients (Sauce): In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, yellow mustard, white wine vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika until well combined.
  6. Taste and Adjust (Sauce): Taste the sauce and adjust the seasonings as needed.
  7. Chill (Sauce): Cover the bowl and refrigerate the sauce for at least 30 minutes.
  8. Cook the Ground Beef: In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  9. Season the Beef: Season the cooked ground beef with salt and pepper.
  10. Sauté the Onion: Add the finely chopped onion to the skillet with the ground beef and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  11. Prepare the Pickles and Lettuce: Thinly slice the dill pickles and shred the lettuce. Set aside.
  12. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Place a pizza stone or baking sheet in the oven while it preheats.
  13. Shape the Dough: Punch down the risen dough. Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll out the dough into a large circle or rectangle.
  14. Transfer the Dough: Carefully transfer the dough to a piece of parchment paper.
  15. Add the Sauce: Spread a generous layer of the “Big Mac” sauce evenly over the pizza dough, leaving a small border for the crust.
  16. Add the Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the sauce.
  17. Add the Beef and Onion Mixture: Spread the cooked ground beef and onion mixture evenly over the cheese.
  18. Add the Pickles: Arrange the thinly sliced dill pickles over the beef and onion mixture.
  19. Bake the Pizza: Carefully slide the pizza (with the parchment paper) onto the preheated pizza stone or baking sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  20. Add the Lettuce: Remove the pizza from the oven and let it cool slightly. Sprinkle the shredded lettuce over the top.
  21. Sprinkle with Sesame Seeds (Optional): If desired, sprinkle sesame seeds over the pizza.
  22. Slice and Serve: Slice the pizza into wedges and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Dough Consistency: The dough should be slightly tacky but not sticky. If it’s too sticky, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time, until it reaches the right consistency.
  • Yeast Activation: Make sure the water is warm, not hot, when activating the yeast. Hot water can kill the yeast.
  • Sauce Flavor: Don’t be afraid to adjust the seasonings in the “Big Mac” sauce to your liking. Some people prefer a little more mustard or vinegar.
  • Cheese Choice: Cheddar cheese is the classic choice for this pizza, but you can also use a blend of cheddar and Monterey Jack for a milder flavor.
  • Crispy Crust: Using a pizza stone or baking sheet that has been preheated in the oven is key to achieving a crispy crust.
  • Lettuce Freshness: Adding the lettuce after baking ensures that it stays crisp and fresh.
  • Ground Beef: Use lean ground beef to avoid excess grease on the pizza.
  • Onion Finely Chopped: Finely chopping the onion ensures that it cooks evenly and doesn’t overpower the other flavors.
  • Pickle Placement: Arrange the pickle slices evenly over the pizza so that every bite has a taste of pickle.
  • Serving Suggestions: Serve the Big Mac Pizza with a side of fries or onion rings for a complete meal.
  • Variations:
    • Big Mac Pizza with a Twist: Add a layer of thousand island dressing under the “Big Mac” sauce for an extra layer of flavor.
    • Spicy Big Mac Pizza: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the “Big Mac” sauce for a spicy kick.
    • Big Mac Pizza with Bacon: Add cooked and crumbled bacon to the toppings for a smoky flavor.
    • Big Mac Pizza with Different Cheese: Experiment with different types of cheese, such as provolone or mozzarella, for a different flavor profile.
    • Vegetarian Big Mac Pizza: Replace the ground beef with plant-based ground beef or crumbled tofu for a vegetarian option.
