  • Author: Maria
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This comforting Salisbury steak features juicy beef patties smothered in a rich mushroom gravy, served over creamy mashed potatoes. It’s a hearty meal perfect for any weeknight dinner!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 cup cooked mashed potatoes (for serving)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Use your hands to mix everything together until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the patties tough.
  2. Once the mixture is well combined, divide it into four equal portions and shape each portion into an oval patty, about 1/2 inch thick. Set the patties aside on a plate.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the patties to the skillet. Make sure not to overcrowd the pan; if necessary, cook them in batches.
  4. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are nicely browned and cooked through. You can check for doneness by cutting into one of the patties; it should no longer be pink in the center.
  5. Once cooked, remove the patties from the skillet and place them on a plate. Cover them with aluminum foil to keep them warm while we prepare the gravy.
  6. In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms. Sauté them for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are tender and have released their moisture.
  7. Next, pour in the beef broth, scraping the bottom of the skillet with a wooden spoon to release any browned bits from the patties. This adds incredible flavor to the gravy!
  8. Bring the broth to a simmer and let it cook for about 5 minutes. This will help to concentrate the flavors.
  9. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water together until smooth. Slowly pour this mixture into the simmering broth while stirring constantly. This will thicken the gravy. Continue to cook for another 2-3 minutes until the gravy is thickened to your liking.
  10. Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over the top. Let them simmer in the gravy for about 2-3 minutes to absorb some of that delicious flavor.
  11. While the patties are simmering, add the frozen peas to the skillet. Stir them in gently and let them cook for an additional 2 minutes until heated through.
  12. On each plate, serve a generous scoop of the cooked mashed potatoes. I love to make my mashed potatoes creamy and buttery, but you can use store-bought if you’re short on time.
  13. Place a Salisbury steak patty on top of the mashed potatoes, and then ladle some of the mushroom gravy and peas over the top. The combination of flavors is just divine!
  14. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and enjoy your delicious Salisbury steak skillet dinner!
