- 4 (6-ounce) salmon fillets, skin on or off
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (about 2 large oranges)
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce (low sodium is best)
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Sesame seeds
- Chopped green onions
- Orange slices
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, whisk together orange juice, soy sauce, honey, grated ginger, minced garlic, and rice vinegar.
- Bring to a simmer over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, or until slightly reduced and thickened, stirring occasionally.
- In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and water to create a slurry.
- Slowly pour the cornstarch slurry into the simmering glaze, whisking constantly until thickened.
- Taste and adjust flavor as needed (more honey for sweetness, rice vinegar for tang, red pepper flakes for heat).
- Remove from heat and set aside.
- Pat salmon fillets dry with paper towels. Score the skin if using skin-on fillets.
- Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with 1 tablespoon olive oil.
- Sear salmon, skin-side down (if using), for 4-5 minutes until crispy and golden brown. For skinless salmon, sear for 3-4 minutes per side.
- Flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes, until cooked through (145°F/63°C).
- During the last minute, brush generously with orange ginger glaze.
- Remove from pan.
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Place salmon on the baking sheet, skin-side down (if using).
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, until cooked through (145°F/63°C).
- During the last 5 minutes, brush generously with orange ginger glaze.
- Broil for the last 1-2 minutes for a more caramelized glaze (optional).
- Remove from oven.
- Preheat grill to medium heat.
- Clean and oil the grill grates.
- Place salmon on the grill, skin-side down (if using).
- Grill for about 4-5 minutes per side, until cooked through (145°F/63°C).
- During the last minute, brush generously with orange ginger glaze.
- Remove from grill.
- Plate the cooked salmon.
- Garnish with sesame seeds, chopped green onions, and orange slices (optional).
- Serve immediately with rice, vegetables, or salad.
Notes
- Low sodium soy sauce is recommended for the glaze.
- Scoring the salmon skin prevents curling during cooking.
- Internal temperature of salmon should reach 145°F (63°C).
- Adjust the glaze flavor to your preference.
