Description
Easy and delicious cinnamon twists made with refrigerated pizza dough, perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a sweet treat.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package (13.8 ounces) refrigerated pizza dough
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Optional: 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- Optional: 2-3 tablespoons milk or cream (for glaze)
- Optional: 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Unroll the pizza dough onto a lightly floured surface.
- Brush the entire surface of the dough with melted butter. In a medium bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the buttered dough and gently press it in.
- Cut the dough into strips that are about 1 inch wide and 6-8 inches long. Pick up one strip of dough and gently twist it several times, creating a spiral shape.
- Place the twisted dough strips onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each twist. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the twists are golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk or cream, and vanilla extract (if using). Drizzle the glaze over the cooled twists.
- Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- Dough: Refrigerated pizza dough is convenient, but homemade dough works too. Use a relatively thin dough.
- Butter: Don’t skimp on the butter! It’s key for flavor and helps the cinnamon sugar stick.
- Twisting: Don’t twist the dough too tightly.
- Baking Time: Keep a close eye on the twists as baking times can vary.
- Variations:
- Add chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts)
- Use different spices (nutmeg, cardamom, ginger)
- Make cream cheese frosting
- Add chocolate chips
- Make mini twists
- Use puff pastry (adjust baking time)
- Troubleshooting:
- Burning: Reduce oven temperature or cover with foil.
- Not cooking through: Increase baking time.
- Dough sticking: Add more flour.
- Glaze too thick: Add more milk/cream.
- Glaze too thin: Add more powdered sugar.
- Storing: Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat briefly to restore crispness.
