Description
A fragrant and comforting latte infused with the delicate flavors of rose and cinnamon. This homemade treat is a delightful twist on the classic coffee drink.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy, I prefer oat milk!)
- 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee or 2 shots of espresso
- 1 tablespoon rose syrup (see recipe below, or store-bought)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of sea salt
- Optional: Whipped cream, dried rose petals, cinnamon stick for garnish
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup dried culinary rose petals (make sure they are culinary grade!)
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Instructions
- Combine Water and Sugar: In a medium saucepan, combine the water and sugar. Place the saucepan over medium heat.
- Dissolve the Sugar: Stir the mixture constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved. You should no longer see any sugar granules at the bottom of the pan. This usually takes about 3-5 minutes.
- Add Rose Petals: Once the sugar is dissolved, add the dried culinary rose petals to the saucepan.
- Simmer: Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes. This allows the rose petals to infuse their flavor into the syrup. The syrup will thicken slightly.
- Strain the Syrup: Remove the saucepan from the heat. Place a fine-mesh sieve over a heat-proof bowl or jar. Carefully pour the syrup through the sieve to remove the rose petals. Discard the rose petals.
- Add Lemon Juice: Stir in the lemon juice. The lemon juice helps to brighten the flavor and acts as a preservative.
- Cool and Store: Let the rose syrup cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. Store the syrup in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. The syrup will thicken further as it cools.
- Brew Coffee or Prepare Espresso: Brew your coffee or prepare your espresso. You’ll need about 1/2 cup of strong coffee or 2 shots of espresso. I find that a dark roast coffee works best to complement the rose and cinnamon flavors.
- Heat and Froth the Milk: Heat the milk in a saucepan or using a milk frother. If using a saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it is steaming but not boiling. Whisk vigorously to create foam. If using a milk frother, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to heat and froth the milk.
- Combine Ingredients: In a mug, combine the brewed coffee or espresso, rose syrup, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of sea salt. Stir well to combine. The salt enhances the sweetness and balances the flavors.
- Pour in the Milk: Gently pour the heated milk into the mug, leaving some room for the foam.
- Spoon on the Foam: Spoon the frothed milk foam on top of the latte.
- Garnish (Optional): If desired, garnish the latte with whipped cream, dried rose petals, and a cinnamon stick.
- Enjoy! Sip and savor the delightful combination of coffee, rose, and cinnamon. This latte is perfect for a cozy morning or a relaxing afternoon treat.
Notes
- Adjust Sweetness: Adjust the amount of rose syrup to your liking.
- Spice it Up: Add a pinch of cardamom or nutmeg for an extra layer of warmth and spice.
- Make it Iced: For an iced latte, combine the coffee, rose syrup, cinnamon, and salt in a glass. Add ice and top with cold milk. Stir well and enjoy.
- Vegan Option: Use your favorite non-dairy milk.
- Rose Water: If you don’t have dried rose petals, you can add a few drops of rose water to the syrup instead. Be careful not to add too much.
- Lavender Rose Latte: Add a teaspoon of dried lavender buds to the rose syrup while it’s simmering for a floral twist.
- Chocolate Rose Latte: Add a tablespoon of cocoa powder to the coffee before adding the milk for a decadent chocolate rose latte.
- Experiment with Coffee: Try different types of coffee beans to find your favorite flavor combination.
- Syrup is too thick: If your rose syrup is too thick, add a tablespoon or two of water and stir until it reaches the desired consistency.
- Syrup is not flavorful enough: If your rose syrup is not flavorful enough, you can add more dried rose petals and simmer for a longer period of time.
- Milk is not frothing: Make sure your milk is cold before frothing. Also, use a milk frother designed for the type of milk you are using. Some milk frothers work better with dairy milk than non-dairy milk, and vice versa. If using a saucepan, whisk vigorously and consistently to create foam.
- Latte is too bitter: If your latte is too bitter, add more rose syrup or a touch of honey to sweeten it.
- Latte is too sweet: If your latte is too sweet, add a splash of milk or coffee to dilute the sweetness.
- Store leftover rose syrup in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
