Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
- 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
- 2 cups mashed potatoes (prepared, homemade or store-bought)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
- Shape the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties, about 1 inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up while cooking.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the hamburger patties to the skillet. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the beef broth and scrape the bottom of the pan to deglaze, incorporating any browned bits from the patties for added flavor.
- Stir in the cream of mushroom soup and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well until the sauce is smooth and combined.
- Add the frozen mixed vegetables to the sauce, stirring to combine. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 5 minutes, letting the flavors meld together.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, spread the sauce and vegetable mixture evenly across the bottom.
- Carefully place the cooked hamburger patties on top of the sauce mixture, ensuring they are evenly spaced.
- Spread the prepared mashed potatoes over the hamburger patties, smoothing it out with a spatula to cover them completely.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the mashed potatoes, ensuring every part is covered for a cheesy finish.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil to prevent the cheese from burning and to keep the moisture in.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
- After 25 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
- Once done, remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for about 5 minutes before serving.
- Garnish the dish with freshly chopped parsley for a pop of color and added flavor.
- Serve hot, and enjoy with a side salad or crusty bread for a complete meal.
- This dish can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, consider using a mix of ground beef and ground pork.
- Feel free to customize the mixed vegetables based on your preference or what you have on hand.
- If you prefer a spicier kick, add a dash of hot sauce or some diced jalapeños to the sauce mixture.
- For a creamier texture, you can mix in a little sour cream or cream cheese into the mashed potatoes before spreading them on top.
