Ingredients
Scale
- 4 medium-sized apples (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup rolled oats
- 1/4 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup raisins or dried cranberries (optional)
- 1/2 cup apple juice or water (for steaming)
- Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (for serving, optional)
Instructions
- Wash the apples thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt or wax. Pat them dry with a clean towel.
- Using a sharp knife or an apple corer, carefully remove the core from each apple, leaving the bottom intact.
- Score the skin around the middle of each apple with a small paring knife to prevent bursting during cooking.
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, rolled oats, chopped nuts, and melted butter. Add raisins or dried cranberries if using.
- Mix until well combined; the mixture should be crumbly but hold together when pressed.
- Generously stuff each apple with the filling, pressing down slightly to pack it in. Mound it on top for a delicious crust.
- Place the stuffed apples upright in a heatproof dish or directly in the air fryer basket.
- Pour apple juice or water into the bottom of the air fryer basket or dish to create steam.
- Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for about 5 minutes.
- Carefully place the dish with the stuffed apples into the air fryer basket.
- Cook at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes, checking for doneness at the 15-minute mark.
- Insert a fork into the side of an apple; it should slide in easily but still have some firmness. Continue cooking in 2-3 minute increments if needed.
- Carefully remove the apples from the air fryer using tongs or a spatula.
- Let them cool for a few minutes before serving to allow the filling to set.
- Drizzle extra melted butter over the top if desired.
- Serve warm, topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
- For an extra touch, sprinkle additional cinnamon or drizzle caramel sauce over the top.
- These baked apples also make a fantastic breakfast option with yogurt and granola.
Notes
- Adjust the sweetness by using more or less brown sugar based on your preference.
- Feel free to experiment with different nuts or dried fruits in the filling.
